Odysea Wins Four Accolades in Great Taste Awards

Artisan Greek food brand Odysea is celebrating having been awarded accolades for four of its wonderfully flavoursome range in this year’s prestigious Great Taste Awards. The two-star win for the company’s Pine & Fir Tree Honey and one star for its Saganaki Kefalotyri Cheese are particular achievements for the brand.

 

Organised by the Guild of Fine Food, the awards are acknowledged as a benchmark of quality for the specialty food and drink sector and regarded as the ‘Oscars’ of the culinary world. Over 10,000 entries were judged by over 400 experts including 38 specially trained coordinating food writers, with tastings taking place over 49 days from March to early July.

 

When testing Odysea’s Pine & Fir Tree Honey, the judge’s notes indicated: "A luscious dark golden colour with a gorgeous waxy consistency. We loved the subtle pine and fir flavours, the perfect level of sweetness, the hint of saltiness, the sheer sexiness of this honey. Complex, fascinating and three-dimensional.”

 

Odysea are exceptionally proud to have been awarded one star for their Saganaki Kefalotyri Cheese which has recently launched exclusively in Waitrose to challenge the huge popularity of Cypriot halloumi within the UK. An authentic Greek cheese traditionally dipped in flour then fried until it is soft on the inside and crispy on the outside. It is made with sheep and goat’s milk and has a much richer flavour than halloumi. The judges were particularly impressed by the “wonderfully comforting” nature of the product when cooked and the way that the “cheese has melted slightly with the flour crisping on top. The flavour of the cheese comes through gently and the salt level is good. We found this unusual and moreish.”

 

Odysea was also awarded one star for its wonderfully tasty Fruitaigrette vinegar, with particular reference made to its “really good depth of apple flavour…a well balanced vinegar without any acrid taste, the apple rounding the flavour and bringing a sweetness” and its “deep and attractive…alluring portwine colour” The judges felt that it “would be lovely in glazes and dressings. Very good, a useful, well made product.”

 

One star was also awarded to the brand’s Grape Molasses with the judges noting that it delivered “a delightful winey, quince-fruited aroma. Gently viscous and shimmery in the glass. The flavour is very sweet with lovely muscatel grape characteristics. The range of flavours is wonderful with a range of dried fruit notes alongside the muscatel. We can imagine multiple uses for this from dressings to cocktails via marinades.”

Odysea has nurtured relationships with Greek artisan producers since 1991 when brand founder Panos Manuelides first brought authentic Greek olives to the UK - selling them from a stall in London’s Portobello Road. Now, 24-years later, Odysea has cemented its reputation amongst retailers, foodservice operators and consumers for its expertise in, and understanding of, Greek food.
